In a groundbreaking achievement, NASA's James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has identified the most ancient and distant galaxy ever observed, named MoM-z14. This galaxy's light dates back to just 280 million years after the Big Bang, making it the earliest known galaxy in the universe. With a redshift of z = 14.44, MoM-z14 surpasses the previous record-holder, JADES-GS-z14-0, which existed around 300 million years post-Big Bang.
MoM-z14 is remarkably luminous and compact, with a mass comparable to the Small Magellanic Cloud.
It is currently undergoing a burst of star formation and exhibits a nitrogen-to-carbon ratio similar to that found in ancient globular clusters. This discovery not only challenges existing theories about early galaxy formation but also suggests that even earlier galaxies may soon be detected, marking a transformative moment in our understanding of the cosmos.
